Atom is a free open-source text and source code editor for Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Linux operating systems. It supports plug-ins written in Node.js, and embedded Git Control, developed by GitHub. This desktop application was built using web technologies. Most of the extension packages have free software licenses and are community-built and maintained. Atom is based on a framework named Electron (formerly known as Atom Shell) that enables cross-platform desktop applications using Chromium and Node.js. Atom is written in CoffeeScript and Less. It can also be utilized as an Integrated development environment (IDE). This source code text-editor was released from beta, as version 1.0, on June 25, 2015. It was coined by its developers as a “hackable text editor for the 21st Century”.
