CodePen or codepen.io is a social development environment for front-end designers and developers. It’s an online community for testing and showcasing user-created HTML, CSS, and Javascript code snippets. It functions as an online code editor and open-source learning environment, where developers can create code snippets, called “pens”, and test them.
The website was founded in 2012 by full-stack developers Alex Vazquez, Timothy Sabat, and front-end designer Chris Coyier. It’s employees work in a decentralized, remote environment, seldom meeting together in person.
CodePen is one of the largest communities for web designers and developers to showcase their coding skills. As of 2015, the website is estimated to have 330 thousand registered users. It’s monthly visitors is said to be around 17 million or more as of 2017.
